Early Math and Logic (K - 1 grade)

At SchoolPlus, we believe that logic is fundamental. It's fundamental to mathematics, science, reasoning, cognitive thinking and so much more. Traditionally, logic is not taught in a classroom setting, but at SchoolPlus, we've taken the ideas and concepts of logic and transformed them into a fun and exciting class which will engage your child(ren) and get them excited about learning. Research has shown that children who are encouraged to understand the process of thinking (i.e. logic) tend to be inquisitive, creative, confident, compassionate, and communicative. Our Early Logic class aims to help young children develop their thought process, which will guide them throughout their formative years.

Through educational games, our children learn how to read, simple arithmetic operations, as well as receive fundamental knowledge about the world around them. This class will introduce children to Russian songs that are familiar to us, parents, from our childhood, and play beat and rhythm games to develop a sense of melody and rhythm. This is an interactive class where young children are exposed to music in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Music and Movement - Glee Club (K - 5 grade)

Early Math and Logic (2 - 3 grade)

This class offers an enrichment program that follows Singapore Math concepts to develop child's exposure into the meaning of math. Gaining a full understanding of a math concept is based on the use of the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to build confidence and enjoy math. We explore the usage of Mathematics in real life and history of Math.

Our Math program for Early Elementary School age children involves children in a variety of activities that create a foundation for mathematical understanding, problem solving, developing logic and critical abilities. Fun is a crucial element in the learning experience and children will experience fun through intellectual creative games that develop their imagination and intellectual abilities. Our Math classes are inclusive classes hence all elements of learning will be adjusted according to your child's ability. We promote healthy challenge, the kind that allows child's cognitive and emotional development to blossom and reach its full potential. Our style for the lessons is both understandable and enjoyable to young children.

Mathematics (4 - 5 grade)

Our approach to teaching Math is based on the Singapore Math curriculum and method. The main goal of our classes for Upper Elementary School grades is to make sure that children have a systematic knowledge of Arithmetic and of the basics of Algebra, and that they can use it effectively in different situations, starting with taking multiple-choice tests, where everything should be done quickly, and ending with solving complicated problems from Math Olympiads, that require a non-routine approach and creative thinking. We have intentionally chosen some topics that are not usually presented in the standard curriculum for this age level, such as Set Theory, Logic and Reasoning, and Probability, Express Methods of Computing, Different Numerical System. Our style is understandable and enjoyable to children.

SchoolPlus test preparation classes differ from other test preparation programs. Students not only master test-taking techniques, but also study Mathematics as a subject. Without good understanding of math concepts and how they are interconnected, improvement of their score beyond a certain point becomes impossible. In our opinion, the serious and systematic studying of Mathematics is the only way to achieve a high score.

Chess (All Levels: Beginners/Intermediate/Advanced)

It is a well-known fact that chess develops intelligence. And what is intelligence if not the ability to solve problems? In our chess classes, children learn to play the game and discover that the techniques used to analyze chess situations can also be used, sometimes quite creatively, to grapple with puzzling questions in school and real life. Step by step, children learn various strategical and tactical moves in chess, beginnings and end games. Students in intermediate and advanced groups learn various combinations featuring queen sacrifices, double attacks, discovered checks, and many other useful tactical elements, or just quiet moves that eliminate the opponent's potential flight squares. Studying of the "immortal" games of world champions, as well as games of today's strongest grandmasters, is an indispensable part of our classes. Theoretical knowledge is supported with games in class. Children play the game in every class, against each other and the instructor. Our instructors are professional chess coaches, many still active competitive players.

The study of chess builds confidence, encourages concentration, fosters a lifelong love of intellectual exploration, demonstrates cause-and-effect relationships, teaches strategy, and promotes the setting and achieving of goals.

  • New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJASK) Preparation

In the state of New Jersey, public school students in grades three through eight are mandated to take the Assessment of Skills and Knowledge each spring. Although public school teachers try their best to adequately prepare their students for these assessments, it is imperative for students to seek additional enrichment outside of school in order to earn the best possible scores. In this course, students will enrich their reading comprehension and writing skills that will help them not only score well on the NJASK, but also earn higher grades in Language Arts classes.

  • Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) Critical Reading and Writing Preparation

All over the country, college-bound high school students must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test and score well in order to earn admittance to the college of their choice. Because of the extreme difficulty of this test, many students need additional enrichment outside of school in order to hone the critical thinking, analytical reading, and grammatical and writing skills that are necessary to score as well as possible on this test. In this course, students will learn and practice how to write an excellent essay under tight time constraints, how to critically think, read, analyze, and compare excerpts of literature, and how to adhere to and employ proper standard American English grammatical constructs.
