; Math,

The challenging and at the same time fascinating road of mathematical olympiads, which I set foot in high school, took me from my native city of Almaty (Kazakhstan) to Akademgorodok, the Siberian hub of Soviet science, and determined my professional career: I graduated from Novosibirsk State University, I got PhD in mathematics at the Center for Computational Science of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Moscow) and for many years worked in the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan. Mathematical modeling of natural objects and processes was my main area of research, although I was always fascinated by the beauty of pure mathematical abstractions, and I am absolutely sure that the aesthetic criterion should be applied to the evaluation of any scientific theory or method along with the criteria of accuracy and efficiency. This is what I strive for when training my 3-5 graders in School Plus - for every problem discussed in the classroom, we are trying to find the most elegant solution. My five years of teaching experience at the School Plus showed that children between the ages of seven and nine are able to perceive rather complex mathematical concepts that go far beyond primary school if an element of aesthetics is involved in their presentation.
